Al started coaching in 1958 at Gloucester City, New Jersey High School. His first head coaching assignment was Springfield, Montco High School in 1966. Springfield finished last in the Bux-Mont league the previous season and also in Black’s first year.
The next year they finished 7-3 starting a string of 17 consecutive winning seasons for Black. Springfield won the Bux-Mont League in 1968 and the Suburban I in 1970, going undefeated averaging 49.5 points a game and ranked #1 in Delaware Valley by Philadelphia Inquirer.
He transferred to Coatesville in 1971, taking over a team that had gone 1-10 the previous season. Coatesville won Ches-Mont titles in 1972, 76, 77, 81 and 82, again being named the #1 team in Eastern PA by the Inquirer in 1981 and 82. His overall record at the two schools was 160-48-3.
Al twice coached in the Big 33 game and was head coach of the Suburban All-Stars in the inaugural Philadelphia City-Suburban All-Star Game in 1968. His team defeated the city all-stars 54-0.
Later Al coached at Millersville University, Widener University and Delaware Valley College being part of three more championship teams in the 19080’s.
In 2003, Al was invited to coach the offense for Team Europe at the World Jr. Championship in San Diego. After that he coached the London Olympians to an undefeated season in the UK’s Division I, winning the Brit-Bowl (UK champions).
In 2005 he coached in Hamburg, Germany and 2007 Osnabruck, Germany in the German Federation League.
